Intranasal Zinc Product Linked to Loss of Sense of Smell
The Food and Drug Administration has just released an advisory warning consumers not to use the following Zicam products for the relief of cold symptoms as they may cause a permanent loss your sense of smell (anosmia):
- Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
- Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
- Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size (a discontinued product)
The FDA reports that 130 cases of Anosmia have been confirmed as associated with Zicam products. The loss of sense of smell is a serious side effect. It can impede your sense of taste and put you in harm's way if you can not detect the smell of smoke or dangerous chemicals in the air. If you experience anosmia, contact your doctor immediately.
