Couple pays $375K to woman bitten by their dog

Kalamarz v. Yarshevitz

A Brooklyn couple agreed to pay $375,000 to a woman who was bitten by their dog. The injured woman, Maria Kalamarz, was working as the couple's housekeeper at the time of the April 2005 incident. She claimed that she sustained a 22-centimeter-long laceration and injuries of four intervertebral discs. She alleged that the couple, Anton and Mary Ellen Yarshevitz, were aware that the dog had bitten someone else in an unprovoked incident. The Yarshevitzes contended that the dog, a chow chow, was not vicious and that the prior incident occurred when a bystander was trying to stop a fight that involved the chow chow and another dog. The parties ultimately negotiated a settlement.
