Majority Admit to Distracted Driving, Other Reckless Behavior on the Road

Driving safely is crucial for protecting ourselves and others on the road. However, a recent AAA study reveals a concerning trend among drivers, including those on Long Island.

Most say they speed, drive distracted or aggressively

AAA surveyed motorists nationwide. Respondents received anonymity in exchange for their honesty. Perhaps as a result, more than half of drivers confessed to engaging in at least one form of risky driving behavior. Here are some of the alarming statistics:

  • Nearly 60% of drivers admit to actions like speeding, driving aggressively, and becoming distracted by their phones while behind the wheel.
  • Over 20% of drivers have driven more than 15 mph over the speed limit on highways and over ten mph over the limit on local streets.
  • A small but worrying 2% of drivers have admitted to all the dangerous behaviors listed in the survey.

Speeding is a particularly notable problem. In New York alone, 36% of fatal crashes in 2021 were related to excessive speed. Despite this, many drivers do not view speeding as dangerous as other risky behaviors. The truth is that driving faster can increase the risk of losing control, and excessive speed increases the violence of impact in a car accident, potentially making the victims’ injuries worse.

Distracted and aggressive driving are also highly dangerous behaviors. Driving while using a cellphone or other handheld device reduces your awareness of what is happening around you and your ability to react quickly to changing conditions, such as reaching a traffic jam or red light. Tailgating and changing lanes too close contribute to many terrible collisions. A motorist who chooses to do any of these things — not to mention two or more at the same time — puts you and your loved ones at an unacceptable risk of serious injury and death.

Seeking help after an accident

If you or a loved one has been hurt in a car accident, it’s essential to understand your options. Consulting with a personal injury lawyer can provide you with the guidance you need to seek maximum compensation.
