Winter driving can be challenging in New York State. Freezing temperatures and snowfall can make surfaces treacherous for motorists.
The following three things can help you stay safe this winter when taking to the roads.
1. Check the forecast
Weather forecasters are pretty good at predicting the kind of weather that could make driving more difficult. If you don’t catch the weather bulletin on the news, consider checking it on your phone each night so you can be better prepared for the conditions you might face the next day. Just because it is fine when you go to bed, or when you set out in the morning, does not mean it will stay that way the whole day.
2. Prepare your vehicle now
Check your tires and fluids now and take steps such as replacing tires and topping up fluids early. Keeping your vehicle in optimal condition increases the chance it will perform well in difficult conditions. Put a blanket in the car and maybe some spare warm clothing, too, just in case you get stuck in the snow. If snow is forecast, take a flask of hot drink and maybe some spare food, just in case.
3. Think carefully about your route
Learn where snow plows clear first and which roads are gritted first. Think about where water can accumulate and freeze. Your winter weather route might be slower or longer than the one you normally drive, but it will be worth it if it saves you from a crash. Remember too that sometimes the safest thing is to postpone a journey for another time.
However well you prepare, it’s still possible you get caught up in a crash caused by a less careful driver. Learning how to claim compensation will be crucial in such circumstances.
